Leading Together: Insights from the Board & Executive Summit

As part of our Nonprofit Essentials Program Series, in partnership with Shafer Leadership Academy, we recently held our bi-annual Board President and Executive Director Summit.  Eight organizations participated by bringing both their Executive Director and their Board President to learn together, grow together, and plan together.

It was a great day for organizations to pause and be mindful of each person's role in advancing the organization's mission.  (Don't worry if you missed this one, look for another session coming in June). Here are a few brief takeaways:

Board Members...

  • Be passionate. Understand and advocate for the cause of the organization.

  • Be prepared. Review and digest Board materials when they are delivered to you.

  • Be participatory. Engage in discussion and focus on the work at hand.

Executive Directors...

  • Be clear. Whether you are communicating to clients, funders, staff, the public, or board members, share in a manner that reflects the needs of the information's recipient.

  • Be curious. Ask questions, learn from others, don't fear not having all the answers, and lead your team to find answers together.

  • Be connected. Cultivate a culture that keeps your staff and board in touch with the organization's vision and mission.
